THE GRAND EXPERIMENT -- Two boys, Two Cultures, by Anouk Ride
Paperback
Publisher: Hachette Livre (May 2007)
ISBN: 9780734409201

In 2001 I travelled to Kamchatka in the Russian Far East with writer Anouk Ride. Well a few years on from that trip and Anouk is embarking on an adventure of a different kind - this time it's the release of her first book The Grand Experiment, published by Hachette Livre.
The Grand Experiment traces the lives of two young aboriginal boys sent from their Nyungar land in Western Australia to school in Europe in the 1850s. A Spanish missionary, Rosendo Salvado, was behind what he called 'the grand experiment of the civilisation of the Aboriginies...' his plan was to 'prove that Aboriginal people could be educated and civilised'.
You can read about the book in THE AUSTRALIAN, or you can hear an interview with Anouk from the radio program LIFE MATTERS on the ABC's web site.
The official launch of the book will be held at READINGS in Carlton, Victoria on Monday night 7th May. The Grand Experiement is available now at your local bookshop.
HOOKED -- A True Story of Pirates, Poaching and the Perfect Fish, by G. Bruce Knecht
Paperback
Publisher: Allen & Unwin Australia (June 2006)
ISBN: 9781741143881

Hooked is the first-hand account of an action-packed pursuit across the wild Southern Ocean, as an Australian Customs Patrol boat attempts to intercept Patagonian Toothfish pirates caught fishing in the Australian Fishing Zone around Heard Island in 2003.
Icebergs, Diplomatic tensions, South African mercinaries and hurricanes all combine to make this a hard-to-put-down volume.
Along with graphic day-by-day accounts of the chase, author Bruce Knecht also provides an insight into the short history of the commercialisation of the species, and the consumer pressures that may ultimately see the collapse of yet another fishery at the hands (and hooks) of over-zealous fishers.

EXPOSING NATURE: a guide to wildlife photography by Frank Greenaway
CSIRO Publishing
ISBN 0 643 09290 0
Review first published in Wildlife Australia magazine.

At a time when most new "photography" books have titles like An Idiot's Guide to Photoshop or Twenty New Ways to Fix up Bad Photos on your Home Computer, it's refreshing to find a new release that is more concerned with the real-world aspects of nature photography.
